The San Antonio Express-News reported November 7, 2006 on an investigation regarding suspicions from a reader that her sister-in-law (who passed away three years ago with asbestos brought home on their father’s clothing.  The father was a plumber at Kelly Air Force Base for 38 years.  The investigation revealed that it is reasonable to assume that her husband and his sister were exposed to asbestos when they were young because peritoneal mesothelioma, a cancer that affects the abdominal lining, is extremely rare, is generally associated with asbestos exposure, and is typically diagnosed many years after exposure.

It was further reported that according to information on the Web site of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, “Asbestos-related diseases have occurred in family members whose only contact was dust from an exposed worker’s clothing.”

Various environmental surveys completed in 1980 and 1995 mentioned “potential asbestos-containing materials” in Building 301, the base’s largest plating facility; and a 1989 survey found “friable” asbestos in “pipe joint insulation” in Building 301.  In 2001, the Air Force conducted an “asbestos survey” of Building 171, Kelly’s largest administrative building and found asbestos-containing insulation in pipes, pipe joints and hot water tanks.
